Everything and everyone in Barbieland are perfect and happy; all the Barbies and all the Kens. Or are they? When (one) Barbie begins to have an existential crisis, she faces a difficult choice; leave behind her pink-infused home of beaches and dance parties and set off for dangerous journey to a strange new place - the real world.
This live action feature of Mattel's Barbie doll is one of the more curious mixes of talents and source material. Starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling and directed by Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird), this is a campy, technicolour homage to the titular Barbara Millicent Roberts (yes, that is her full name!) that begs to be seen on the big screen.
Quotes:
‘’★★★★ It’s a riotously entertaining candy-coloured feminist fable that manages simultaneously to celebrate, satirise and deconstruct its happy-plastic subject. Audiences will be delighted. Mattel should be ecstatic.‘’
- Mark Kermode, The Observer
‘’★★★★ This is a wonderfully fun watch that somehow manages to simultaneously celebrate and satirise the Barbie brand, its feminism and girliness pairing like gorpcore sandals with a floaty pink skirt.’’
- Alison Saville, Time Out
